Year 3

Year 3 were trying to find patterns in the way that the size of shadows change. We recognised that shadows are formed when light from a light source is blocked by a solid object.

We discovered that shadows are longer at the start of the day and get shorter up until the middle of the day when the sun is highest in the sky. During the afternoon our shadows gradually get longer again, due to the position of the sun in the sky.

How do shadows change during the day ?

Year 3 have found that we need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light. We made careful observations inside the bear cave, when there was no light ,some light and lots of light. We challenged ourselves by finding as many light sources around the classroom as we could.

Whats inside the bear cave ?

Year 3 have recognised that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.

We investigated which soil would soak up water the best.

Year 3 Science morning at Birchensale

Maple and Oak class had a fantastic morning with Mr. Wilkes at Birchensale learning all about air resistance and flight. We had great fun and showed some real curiosity about Science.

Year 3 carried out an investigation using paper helicopters. Each group carried out a different investigation looking at different sizes, shapes and weight of paper helicopters to see which one would fall the quickest.

Each group made a prediction, before doing the test at least three times so that it was   a fair test. We then used stop watches to record the time it took for each paper helicopter to hit the ground. Finally we recorded our results in a table and discussed our findings.

Take a look at what a fun morning we had !
